Ten Songs for Life
I'm back with another of the Let Your Blog Shine writing challenges. This week the theme is "Ten songs I will listen to the rest of my life." Being a huge music person, this is actually quite hard to narrow down to just ten, but I'll do my best. I'll try to link to songs if I can, figured that would be easier than dropping videos directly into this post! Ok, here we go. These are the songs I will never tire of.
1. Hold On, Hold On by Neko Case. I know a lot of people don't get her. I know that she's unusual and not mainstream and all those other things. I just have always adored her music, something about it just stirs something deep down in me. This particular song is the first one of hers I ever heard and it remains my favorite.
2. That's How Strong My Love Is by Otis Redding. This was our first dance song at our wedding. I don't think there needs to be much more explanation than that!
3. Tomorrow Comes a Day Too Soon by Flogging Molly. This song was also used at our wedding as the wedding party group dance. It just also has always been a huge mood booster for me, if I need a pick me up, this song is the one.
4. Anything by Josh Groban. I know, that's cheating. I should be choosing one song by him. But I can't decide between You Are Loved or February Song or Straight To You or his cover of the Stevie Wonder song I Believe When I Fall In Love or yeah. That's why I am just saying anything by Josh Groban. Call me a nerd. I love him. Grobanite for life.
5. The Rainbow Connection from the Muppet Movie. I just said I was a nerd right? I think most everyone here knows I'm a huge Muppet fan. I have always loved this particular song. It has become even more special to me now because it is Ollie's lullaby. I started singing it to him when he was a newborn and even now if he gets upset all I have to do is start singing this song and he calms down pretty quickly. It's just magical. I want this played at my funeral. I just love this song.
6. Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles. Again, how does one pick just one Beatles song? It's a hard choice really, but I love this one because of it's positive message. Basically I love that it's saying "it's all right. There is sun."
7. Sons and Daughters by the Decemberists. I love this song hardcore. I had these grand ideas that this song would be playing as Ollie was born, but we hadn't quite finished making my birth playlist yet when I went into labor, oops. I am not sure what it is about this song that makes me think of a journey to parenthood other than it has the lines "when we arrive sons and daughters." I don't know. Sometimes we can't explain the things we love I guess!
8. Slide by the Goo Goo Dolls. I have no good reason for choosing this song other than it will always transport me back to high school and the early days of dating Nate. It was on the radio a lot at that time and it always makes me think of that time.
9. If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot. And now my mom is paying attention. Hi mom. My parents listened to a ton of Gordon Lightfoot when I was growing up. They had his song Beautiful sung at their wedding. I actually enjoy a lot of his music and it makes me think of my childhood, this particular song is one of my favorites.
10. Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It by Stars. I downloaded this song a few weeks before I found out I was expecting Ollie and it became very autobiographical for me after I learned I was having him. Something about it just speaks to me about the whole parenthood experience and it just means a lot to me.
Whew. I had a hard time stopping at ten! If you held a gun to my head and forced me to choose though, I feel these are the ten songs I would pick. At least at this point in my life. I'm sure it could change. I know if you asked me this same question even five years ago I might not have had the same responses!
What are some of your songs for life?
